Top 100 Apps on iTunes App Store by Category
It’s no secret games are the most popular type of apps on iTunes, but the dynamics are changing. As someone who’s very interested in technology and mobile applications, I wanted to get more insight on the most popular apps.
You can find a lot of great app metrics at 148apps. For example as of January 2010:

That’s really great and helpful. But I want to know more about the Top100 apps. So I did some primary research and found the Top 100 Free Apps in the iTunes UK store by Category.
As of January 2010:
Games and Entertainment apps again make up the majority. There’s not many categories that can break into the Top. Despite their popularity as shown by 148apps data, there’s no Education or Books in the Top100. News apps seem to be growing in popularity as they make getting targeted news more convenient and enjoyable, compared to the alternative of having to go to safari and typing and pinching and searching and tapping… These include Sky News, Engadet, etc. But surprisingly not Bloomberg which is a quality app. Having a “really” useful utility can also make an app really popular. (e.g. Battery Free and iHandy Level). To win in any other category other than games/ent. would require a very good quality app such as Spotify and Shazam (for music) and Facebook and Skype (for Social Networking). For travel, there’s only a few that have made it: Tube Map, Google Earth, and Timeout. Again all high quality apps. See my review of the Timout App.
That’s my initial thoughts after looking at the data.
